Itinerary road trip Argentina

Day 1 - 2 Arrival in Argentina, stay in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires, the city of Tango, Maradonna and Evita Perón! Buenos Aires is also known as the Paris of South-America. It is a city with more than 13 million inhabitants spread over 40 different neighborhoods, the so-called ´barrios´, which all have their own character. From the 19th century, a big stream of immigrants came mainly from Italy and Spain and you can still find the influence of these countries in the neighborhoods where the immigrants settled and established themselves.

In the neighborhood of La Boca, for example, you come across the rich Italian culture of its inhabitants. With its colorful houses, it resembles a neighborhood in Genoa.

San Telmo is the most bohemian neighborhood of Buenos Aires where you can find the real Argentinean culture with tango dancing in the streets, traditional eateries, and many antique stores.

Recoleta is since decades the most prestigious neighborhood of Buenos Aires. Its old buildings are a representation of European architecture from the last century and it is known for its fine restaurants and famous cemetery.

Palermo is the trendy upcoming neighborhood with the hippest restaurants and bars, its many designer and vintage shops and grand green parks.

The charming quiet little village of San Agustín de Valle Fértil is situated in San Juan province, part of Cuyo region. It dazzles visitors with its beautiful highly fertile landscape, mountains and rich vegetation full of cactus.

Day 9Road trip to El Chiflón

El Chiflón Provincial Park is situated strategically close to National Park Talampaya and Provincial Park Ischigualasto, on the border of provinces San Juan and La Rioja.

Day 10Road trip to Villa Unión

The city is strategically located in the heart of the Bermejo Valley, 1,153 meters above sea level, at the foothills of the Andes mountains. Beautifully set midst the intense red mountain ranges of Sierra de Famatina and Sierra de Maíz, surrounded by local, traditional wineries and the Bermejo River running, often brutally in the rainy season, through the city.

Day 11Road trip to Belén

Belén is the oldest territory of Catamarca Province. The arrival of the Incas to the territory occurred around 1480. This area of the Calchaquí valley was populated by Hualfines, Culampajaes, and Famayfiles Quilmes Indians, spoke in general the same language, “Quechua”.

The current Belén Village was founded on December, 20th in 1681 by Father Bartolomé de Olmos and Aguilera, who baptized under the name “Bethlehem”, in honor of the town’s patron: “Our Lady of Bethlehem.”
The incredible attractions seduce more than one: endless fertile valleys, areas of crops, wineries, historic monuments and old churches, among others.

Day 12 - 13Road trip to Cafayate

Located at 1.660 meters above sea level, the village of Cafayate is well known due to its famous Torrontes wine production. The right combination of temperature and humidity in this region provides the ideal environment for the growth of the sweet and deep fruit flavor. Getting to know its streets, its houses and mainly its people is a pleasant experience. One cannot miss to observe the unique architecture of the Cathedral, the flowery main square, the picturesque stone mill, or a visit to one of the wine museums.

Day 14Road trip to Cachi

Cachi is a beautiful town in the Chalchaquí Valley of Salta and situated at 2.280 meter above sea level. Nature as well as colonial aristocracy from the XVIII Century can be admired in this environment. In this legendary town, there are white buildings, adobe houses, paved streets and impressive architectural and cultural constructions that are worth admiring. Cachi means ´Salt´ in Quechua due to the fact that natives mistook the top of El Nevado Mountain with a salt mine. The most outstanding places to visit are the Archeological Museum, Cachi Church and Antigales, where deposits of old native civilizations are found.

Day 15 - 16Road trip to Salta

Situated in the Lerma Valley, Salta is the capital city of the homonymous province. It is situated in one of the most fertile and nicest sites ever created by nature in this region. It is located at 1.187 meters above sea level, at the bottom of the 20 de Febrero and San Bernardo Mountains. The Hispanic architecture of the city outstands from the other cities in the country. The colonial spirit from the times of the foundation remains in its houses, streets, hundred-year-old monuments and narrow sidewalks surrounded by the mountains nearby.

Day 17 - 18Road trip to Purmamarca

Purmamarca is situated in the famous Quebrada de Humahuaca (Humahuaca Gorge) and gives a beautiful view on the Seven Colors Hill. The picturesque layout of its streets is centered on the main church, which was built in 1648. The same as with other villages in the region, the houses in Purmamarca are of adobe; earth, clay and straw mixed, a technology passed down through the generations. The main church has currently been noted as National Monument, as it has a particular architecture as well as valuable paintings and images of Cuzco. Enjoy the friendliness of the locals, the delicacies, the crafts fair with regional products and the beautiful colors of the surroundings!

In summary, it was a pleasant trip through the north of Argentina. People don’t speak English everywhere in Argentina. Hotels well chosen and to our liking. The car could have been more spacious. The scenery was beautiful.

A nice selfdrive tour with our kids during the Christmas holidays. The temperature in Buenos Aires was quite high but once in the North the climate was drier. We enjoyed the beautiful nature and day trips. Nice welcome from the New World team.
